On Monday, Billy and I headed to the clinic for our first ultrasound to see if the baby was in the right place and growing appropriately. Once we got into the room, we got ready to film the debut of the little one for Sara and Derek since they couldn’t be there in person. The minute the ultrasound started I could see it, OMG am I seeing double???? There were two very distinct sack with two very distinct tiny little babies. The doctor confirmed that the growth was right on track and the two little babies were doing as well as expected at 5 weeks and 5 days. I on the other hand was completely shocked, I mean I had thought it was going to be twins pretty early on with how I was feeling and the HCG levels but thinking and reality are two very different things. Now it was time to think about sharing the good news with the IPs.
After the appointment, I had a text from Derek sending his love from them and that they were headed out to fly fish. I kept trying to reach them in hopes of catching them before they headed out but ultimately had to wait until the afternoon to share the amazing news. When they finally called I let them know the appointment went well and everything looks great and then asked “so how do you feel about having twins?” Nothing…crickets…so I proceeded to say “…and I am not kidding, it is twins.” I think they were stunned at first, I mean they knew the possibility was there, but when we implanted two last time and neither took, I guess they didn’t think this could be a reality. Once the news settled in they seemed excited, but still cautiously optimistic since they have had such a long hard road to get here.
So now we wait, wait until Monday for the first heartbeat check. This is a big day, I will get the all clear from the clinic and transition to my normal OBGYN to carry me through the pregnancy. Given my age and multiples, I will be considered high risk so I am interested to hear how things may be different than when I carried my own two kids. I have my appointment all scheduled for the 17th so hopefully they will be able to hear the heartbeats but it may be another week or so until that happens.
