Earlier this week, Sara and Derek came in for a visit. They wanted to meet with the head nurse at the hospital, check in on their baby boy and just hang and enjoy some time with our family. They arrived mid-afternoon on Saturday and with our crazy schedule, Billy was heading out for Will’s soccer game just as they were getting to our house. We enjoyed a quick lunch and then sat and talked for a few hours before heading up to Park City. Neither of them have been to Park City so we first hit the Olympic Park which hosted the ski jumping, bobsledding, luge and skeleton events. I have been here a few times before, but every time I go, I am blown away by the different events and how steep they all are, how crazy you have to be to try them for the first time – yikes!!! We did a tour of the museum inside which has equipment, memorabilia, small experience rides and a movie. We then headed up to Park City main street to tour the shops and get some dinner. We ended up at Cisero’s for an Italian dinner, a treat for us since we never eat pasta or Italian at home. The dinner and company were divine. The three of them enjoyed a lovely cocktail, a whiskey sour and afterwards we had to stop at the local liquor store to make our own at home. Sunday we were going to host a casual potluck BBQ at our house for a few friends so that they could get to know Sara and Derek. We loaded up on beer, whiskey and then headed to the market for a few thing we needed.
The next day, Sara and Derek treated us to a Sunday brunch filled with her Grandmother’s buttermilk pancakes, eggs and bacon, just look how yummy it all looks! After feeling full from all the food, we visited my new Nephew Bennett, Andrea, Joel and Wesley, then headed to see some extended stays locations. Sara and Derek plan to come out mid-June for 3 weeks for the birth of Baby A., so we hit 5 different locations and then settled on one they both really liked. However, I have extremely generous friends and family who have offered their homes to stay in while they are on vacation, so S&D have some decisions to make. After touring Extended Stay facilities we hit Sprouts, grabbed a few groceries and headed home to get ready for the BBQ.
Friends started arriving around 4pm with various snacks and salads to share. I am not a meat eater so my friends have learned that if you come to our house for a BBQ that you should bring your own meat, in fact, we just make it a thing now with all of our invites and it ends up being great for everyone to share a little from each other. As I sat back and enjoyed the evening, I looked around and realized how lucky I am to have so many friends to share in this moment. Sara and Derek were smiling and laughing and seemed to be having a great time with our friends as well. As as the party came to a close, we said our last goodbyes and sat out by the fire pit talking until the early hours. We had another big day ahead of us the next day.
On Monday, as we prepared for their departure, Billy ran with Derek to Kindigit Auto shop, Derek is a huge fan of the show Bitchin Rides and we wanted to surprise him with a tour and signed t-shirt by our friend Dave Kindig. The rest of us hung back and got ready for the day. Once Derek and Billy were home, Sara and Derek headed out for lunch with their Lawyer and I headed to my office to work for a few hours. I was going to be meeting up later that day with them for a meeting with the head labor and delivery nurse, but first I had to do my glucose test.
For those that have been pregnant, you know how gross the drink tastes for the glucose test. Luckily it didn’t make me sick, but it wasn’t that delightful to drink. I followed all the fasting instructions and headed to meet them at the hospital. Lucky for me, I was in and out of the lab in minutes.
We spent about an hour with the labor delivery head nurse and the social worker to understand the full process and to answer any of their outstanding questions then headed home before they had to leave for the airport. Our time is always short with their visits, but we head back to Napa in late April for their baby shower, so we will get to see their life, meet their friends and family (finally) and enjoy a little time in Napa.
